The Problem

There are so many dogs in the U.S. and not enough people to care for them. Each year, it is believed that there is a shortage of 4 million families to care for a lonely dog. Small and big dog breeds do go homeless.

Why are there so many shelter dogs?

There even more shelter dogs now because thousands of people are losing their homes in each city in every state across the U.S. due to the economic problems and lack of jobs, and they will lose their dog too :(

Small, hypallergenic is great

Fancy small dog breeds include the Maltipoo, the Poodle, and the Maltese. These in particular are hypoallergenic and great for most households that have not yet had a dog and were not considering to get one. They tend to be small, clean, loyal, good with children, smart, and can be trained with relative ease.

About HelpingSmallPaws.org

HelpingSmallPaws.org is a organization started at the Burlingame Franklin Elementary School to help connect homeless dogs with caring children & their parents. Maltipoo, Poodles, Maltese, Bichon, Pomeranian, etc.

Our mission is to help young families new to dogs learn about small, clean, hypoallergenic designer dogs and understand that they could live with one and would really enjoy being together.

Kelli is a 4th grade elementary school student who created an organization in school and this website to save small hypoallergenic shelter dogs.  She teaches young families that have never thought they could live with a dog in the house to realize that they can with a small hypoallergenic dog like a malti-poo, maltese, poodle, or bichon and that they should adopt a rescue dog, save a dog.  She shows all the things for the home she bought and tested on small hypoallergenic dogs that enable the dog to go to the bathroom on fake grass pads in the house so families don't need to change their routine, training advice, favorite dog products, how to care for a hypoallergenic dog, etc.

Mascot

I am the mascot of HelpingPaws.org

I and my other hypoallergenic friends just want to be part of a pack, you know, to join your family.  We are not pack leaders, we're more like good kids and want to be with you, follow you around the house, we are mostly indoor dogs.  You can even take us in a bag with you shopping.  You can even just leave us indoors all week.  We are very clean and very nice.

A maltipoo after a fur cut and Japanese style dyed ears and paws would look like this!

Our mascott above, Poochie, is an adopted maltipoo shelter dog.

You could even learn to trim and maintain your maltipoo's fur yourself.  It is not too difficult to keep it to a moderate length.

This is a maltipoo (designer breed, half poodle and half maltese). These are often tiny dogs around 6-10 pounds fully grown. Your adopted maltipoo or poo-mix designer dog could look nice like this one after a grooming. Brown ears optional! This dog is not for adoption but rather a fine example of what a dog could be with a fur cut and good brushing.

If you are lucky, you can arrive at the Penninsula Humane Society in Burlingame early enough on a day when a dog like this is brought in for adoption.  We are trying to solve for building awareness among families that want a small hypoallergenic dog that one has just arrived at the shelter.
